Richard Emery Walter passed away at his home in Dolores on Friday August 18, 2017 at the age of 80. He leaves behind his beloved wife and soul mate of 61 years, Judith Anne (Gass) Walter.

Born June 21, 1937 in Durango Colorado to Charles Walter and Carrie (Hunt) Walter. Richard was a lifelong resident in Southwestern Colorado living in Durango, Hesperus, and making his home in Dolores the year of 1967.

Richard is lovingly remembered by not only his wife Judy, but his children Mark Walter and family, Tracey Hately and family; siblings Paula Fuller and family, Ted Kuntz and family, Sharkie Morton and family, Dottie Smith and family, Denny Walter and family, and Larry Walter and family. Richard is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ted Walter and Loren Walter, and sister Barbara Williams.

In his early years, Richard worked for his dad at E&W Super Service/Conoco as a service station attendant. From there he progressed into his career as an oiler servicing heavy equipment, first at Colorado Constructors then to Nielson’s. Richard was known for being the only person who could change the oil on a dozer without getting his white shirt dirty. Richard retired from Nielson’s after 37 years to start his profession as a keen hobbyist.

Richard had a passion for spending time in the great outdoors to include: ridding ATV’s, hunting, fishing, and boating with his dearest friends and family. Anyone who knew Richard knows he was an avid movie enthusiast with an extensive collection of Disney films, westerns, and had a soft spot for romantic comedies. He thoroughly enjoyed gardening and sharing produce with all who crossed his path. When he wasn’t tending to his garden, his favorite past time was baking, eating ice cream, and sharing stories.

Richard had a genuine giving nature. He would do anything to help someone in need whether he knew them or not. His generosity and love is, and will continue to be unmatched and forever missed.

Services will be held at 10am on Saturday August 26, 2017 at Ertel Funeral Home.
